At the age of 26, Caitlin faced a turning point in her life when she was diagnosed with both Common Variable Immunodeficiency and Granulomatous Interstitial lung disease (GLILD). For Caitlin, this diagnosis came as a surprise; growing up, she had shown no symptoms commonly associated with immune deficiencies. In fact, she had lived most of her life feeling normal. However, her journey took a new direction when a perceptive GP noticed her increasing fatigue and recurring illnesses. He had experience working with immunology and respiratory specialists at Sunshine Coast University Hospital and decided to test her for an immune deficiency.

Despite not having a history of frequently being ill or requiring hospitalisations, Caitlin was grateful that her doctor took her concerns seriously and pursued the diagnosis. This early detection significantly impacted her life; prior to her diagnosis, she was often fatigued, falling asleep by 6 PM and frequently battling minor illnesses from March through September.

Since starting treatment, Caitlin’s quality of life has drastically improved. She began a regimen of subcutaneous immunoglobulin (SCIG) therapy, allowing her to manage her condition effectively. With her newfound health and energy, she gradually returned to living her life fully, enjoying time with friends and family without the constant fear of illness that had once held her back.

Caitlin acknowledges that while she remains cautious in crowded places, she refuses to allow her diagnosis to dictate her lifestyle. Instead, she approaches her life with a positive attitude, determined to embrace every opportunity. She emphasises the importance of being proactive in her health management, keeping open lines of communication with her specialists, and seeking their input during difficult moments.

Looking back, Caitlin reflects on her initial fears after her diagnosis—the fear of an uncertain future and the limitations it might impose. However, she quickly learned that while caution is necessary, it doesn’t have to overshadow her desires and ambitions. She embraces the notion that life is precious and advocates for others in similar situations to not let their diagnosis confine them. She offers advice to newly diagnosed individuals: prioritise honest communication with healthcare providers, focus on what they enjoy, and remember that taking small, careful steps can lead to a fulfilling life.

In the years following her diagnosis, Caitlin has taken strides to maintain her well-being. She engages in activities that bring her joy, rediscovering old hobbies and exploring new passions, all while being mindful of her health. She embraces each day with the hope that, by sharing her story, she can inspire others facing similar battles, emphasising the importance of resilience and self-advocacy in one’s health journey.

Caitlin’s story is one of courage and determination, illustrating that a diagnosis, while life-altering, need not define who you are or the life you choose to lead. With the right support and treatment, Caitlin continues to thrive, savouring each moment while remaining vigilant throughout her health journey.
